In the squatter areas and resettlement areas of Asian cities, houses grow little by little. When some money is saved, some materials are available or some friends gather, a wall is completed, a roof is improved, another room is added.

The
active role of professionals is not something to be boosted in isolation. It’s not possible. There is a distinct social context of change in each country, and this social context has a great influence upon how architects and professionals work - or don’t work. It might be very important for each country to examine their own social contexts and look back at their own change processes - in which the professionals operate.
